Loy Krathong Festival

Loy Krathong Festival is one of the most colorful night festival. Krathong is a floating lantern which usually made from banana tree and decorated with banana leafs, flowers and illuminated by candles.
“Loy” means to float and “Krathong” usually refers to lotus shaped containers which floats on the water.

Loy Krathong in Sukhothai

Loy Krathong in Thailand and countries nearby such as Laos, Cambodia and Burma has many legends involved. But most popular are to ask forgiveness the Goddess of Water (Pra Mae Khongkha) and to float away their misfortunes .

Loi Krathong is on the evening of the full moon of the 12th month in the traditional and they do this all evening on the 12th monthThai lunar calendar. In the western calendar this usually falls in November.

Loy Krarhong in Thailand is claimed that it has begun in Sukhothai period and called Loy Phra Pra Teip or Loy Khom (floating lantern) by a court lady of was a consort of the Sukothai king Loethai (14th century) named Nopphamas. She was the first who created krathong like lotus shaped to float in the river instead of floating lantern.

In this festival also has a beauty contests called “Nopphamas Queen Pageants” or “Nang Nopphamas Pageants Contest”.

In Northern Thai, Loi Krathong festival known as “Yi Peng”. Due to a difference between the old Lanna calendar and the Thai calendar, Yi Peng is held on a full moon of the 2nd month of the Lanna calendar (“Yi” means “2nd” and “Peng” means “month” in the Lanna language). Lanna traditional for Yi Pen is to float Khom Loi. Khom Loi is a Lanna style for hot air balloons made from thin paper which usually floated at night.

In Bangkok, Loi Krathong will be held on both sides of the Chao Phraya River.

Sukhothai Loi Krathong and Candle Festival, will be held at Sukhothai Historical Park. Sukhothai Province Experience the festival of the Dawn of Happiness city with chandelier lamp parades and fire blast, play small confection cup spark fireworks, enjoy traditional performance, local recreational games and markets.

In Chiang Mai, Loi Krathong or Yi Peng will be held at ping river(Nawarat bridge) and Thapae gate for parades.
